Weekly Photo Challenge: Urban

This week’s inspiration is “urban”. The idea behind urban photography is to photograph your city and the streets where you grew up as they are. Unlike the photoshopped pictures to which we are accustomed nowadays, urban photography presents a more direct, unaltered view of life. It is about documenting urban living space and how people adapt their environment to certain needs and vice versa. Urban photography shots provide cultural, social, economical, and ecological context all at once, and can capture social tension. Think of urban photography as a complement to street photography—it provides the context in which street photography unfolds.

Here, I’m presenting two views of the same city, a ‘colorless urban”, and a ‘colorful’ one, seen below. Urban settings can be whatever we want them to be – sad and colorless, or lively, colorful, pleasant!

  35. Thanks for the pingback. I really enjoy both these photos. The razor wire one is kind of urbanly intimidating and clearly states “fuck off”, while the second one is more inviting with all it’s vivid colors.

    1. Thank you, Cardinal Guzman! The barbed wire may be found around the (what used to be) the Reuben Island Prison, in Cape Town (as for backstory, where Nelson Mandela and others were kept for years…). My goal was exactly that: the idea of welcoming, and the idea of “no permission”… 😮

I know, I know… Cape Town (RSA) has several streets like that… luckily, his photo has people on it, so, we’re still good… 😮 and the other one, also from Cape Town, but it’s from Reuben Island, where the prison was… I guess everybody falls in love with Cape Town (or, originally, Cidade do Cabo, from the Portuguese!)… What are the odds of two people picking the same city/country to portrait for the weekly photo challenge!!! Fantastic, and thanks for pointing the post out… loved it! 😮
